Gemmological Institute of India (GII) has started to issue certificate of Geographical Origin for Natural Untreated Rubies and Sapphires. Institute will soon start issuing origin certificate for Natural Emeralds also.

Origin certificates were, in the past, based only on the study of inclusions which are considered to be the birthmark of gemstones. As time went on, gemmological laboratories around the world have started advanced study of Optical, Physical and Chemical properties characterizing the country of origin along with geological data.

Research and Development of the GII has been working with latest and highly sophisticated instruments to establish more and more reliable means to identify the origin and as a result, GII has decided to undertake certification of origin, wherever it is possible.

The charge for origin certificate is Rs. 2,500/- per stone.
