GII is alma mater for Indian Gemmologists and students of Gemmological studies in India. Organised study of Gemmology started about 34 years back in Bombay by the Gemmological Institute of India. Institute established the first Gemmology course in the country. It was a biggest turning point in the history of gemmology in India. Institute regularly conducts a full time intensive gemmology diploma programme. This has been developed to help jewellers retailers, diamond and gemstone dealers and new comers.

The seed that was sown in 1971 has grown in to a massive tree spreading its roots in to almost all the states of India, spreading the knowledge of gemstones. Over 5000 students have been already trained by the GII and it is a fact that in every corner of India connected to gemstone business , a graduate gemmologist from GII will definitely be seen. They are the messengers of gemmology. GII's status is truly national.
