| Annual Convocation 2004 |

It gives me great Honour to address you on this landmark occasion of the collaboration of the Gemmological Institute of India with
| The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council | |
| Bharat Diamond Bourse | |
| Diamond Exporters' Association Ltd. and | |
| Gem & Jewellery Exporters' Association. |
I feel proud to say that that Institute has trained
students from all corners of India, through whom the Institute has succeeded
in its mission of spreading gemological knowledge far and wide in the country.
I am happy to say that during the last 3 decades the Gem
testing laboratory of the GII
has been working as a night watchman protecting the interests of the Gem Trade
and industry in India.
I am very much delighted to say that that Council,
the Bourse and the DEAL have come forward to support the activities of the
GII. I am sure with this tremendous support the GII will be able to serve
the industry more effectively.
The Research Centre envisaged under this joint programme will go a long way
in bridging the gap between the scientific research and the gem trade.
Ladies and gentlemen this is the beginning of a new era. The Gem & Jewellery Industry in India will immensely benefit from this collaboration.
I am sure that once this National Research Center is equipped with all the latest sophisticated and state-of-the-art instrumentations, the research studies in India will be at par with other advanced research centers in the world.
Friends, India is known for its scientific developments in the fields of Nuclear Science, Computer Science etc. Similarly I am sure with the help, support and co-operation of you all the scientific research in diamonds and gemstones will take the Indian gem industry to a new height.
I also congratulate my students who have successfully completed the courses at the Institute and are getting their Diploma Certificates today. I wish them all success.
Thank you
