Gemmological Institute of India, the pioneer institute in the field of diamonds and gemstones in India, has started its Laboratory Services and Educational Courses at the door step of the Diamond Industry in Opera House.

For many years the Diamond industry in India has been in dire need of a sophisticated state-of-the-art Research Laboratory.

Gemmological Institute of India has set up a National Research Centre at Opera House. The Research Centre is being equipped with the world class sophisticated instruments required for Diamonds and Gemstones.

The Diamond Grading Laboratory and the Gem Testing Laboratory is housed at : 304,3rd Floor, Sukh Sagar Building , N. S. Patkar Marg, Opera House, Mumbai – 400007.

The National Research Centre was formally inaugurated on 12th of October, 2005 by Shri S. N. Menon, IAS, Commerce Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India at a grand function held at Y. B. Chavan Auditorium, Mumbai. Shri R. M. Premkumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Maharashtra was the Presiding Guest on the occasion and he inaugurated the Education Centre at the same function. Shri Rajiv Bhandari, Managing Director, De Beers India Pvt. Ltd. and Smt. Nirupa Bhatt, Marketing Manager, Rio Tinto Diamonds India were the Guests of Honour.

The education activities are carried out from 304, 3rd Floor, Sukh Sagar Building , N. S. Patkar Marg, Opera House, Mumbai – 400007 as well as from 29, Gurukul Chambers, 187/189, Mumbadevi Road , Mumbai – 400002.

A large scale expansion programme and many more courses in Diamonds, Gemstones, Jewellery and Management courses etc. are on the cards.

Gemmological Institute of India – established in the year 1971 – is a non-profit institute, fully supported by the Gem & Jewellery industry in India. Gemmological Institute of India is a project of The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, and co-sponsored by Diamond Exporters’ Association Limited, Bharat Diamond Bourse and Gem & Jewellery Exporters’ Association. Gemmological Institute of India is truly the representative body of the Indian Gem & Jewellery industry.

Diamond Exporters’ Association Ltd. has its office at 304, 3rd Floor, Sukh Sagar Building , N. S. Patkar Marg, Opera House, Mumbai – 400007. The Association has closed down its office at 503, Panchratna.

The Registered Office at 29, Gurukul Chambers, 187/189, Mumbadevi Road , Mumbai – 400002 will also accept gemstones, diamonds as well as studded jewellery for testing. it will only be a collection and delivery centre. All testing and grading activities will be done at The Diamond Grading Laboratory and the Gem Testing Laboratory : 304 , 3rd Floor , Sukh Sagar Building , N. S. Patkar Marg, Opera House, Mumbai – 400007.
