Research & Development is not just about having sophisticated testing equipment. It requires a multi-dimensional approach consisting of scientific testing, methodologies, technical expertise and the co-operation of important working partners from the scientific field, gemmological labs and processing facilities. With the conglomeration of the Gemmological Institute of India with apex organizations such as the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (under leadership of Shri Bakulbhai), the Bharat Diamond Bourse (under leadership of Shri Kaushikbhai) and other important trade institutions in the country, this Institute has now became a national body representing the entire Gem and Jewellery Industry, on whom lies the responsibility of carrying out Research & Development activities on par with international institutions.

Research and Training are not mutually exclusive. They build and support one another. The availability of both of these to the same organization will fuel the growth of the gem and jewellery industry in India . The formation of this Institution demonstrates the commitment of this industry of being a global player, which the stalwarts of the Indian Gem and Jewellery Industry have come together for the establishment of the National Research Centre.

It is a privilege to be here to celebrate the launch of such an institution. On behalf of Rio Tinto Diamonds and myself, I would like to congratulate and wish all the success to the entire team at GII and all the workers over there.

I would also like to say that earlier I had some discussions with Dr. Panjikar regarding the Champagne Diamond Certification. As your know that Argyle developed the Colour Grading of C1 to C7 and we will be providing this Master Set to GII as well, to include in their Laboratory.

One of the important reasons why we are here is the students and I would like to say something to them. It is wonderful to be here to felicitate the graduating students on this occasion of the Convocation and greet the future of our Industry. To the students who are passing out, let me welcome you to this wonderful industry. It is a distinct pleasure to be here with you today, on what will always be such a special moment in my life; a turning point.

You are now a part of a unique Institution and this Industry. You have chosen to enter an industry which sees the possibility when you pick up a stone. You are entering this industry at a time when there are both opportunities and challenges. When the global markets beckon; however with a rider, that there is no road to falter.

The world is watching as the Indian jewellery industry takes its place in the sun. In order to compete effectively in the international market, organizations are changing themselves and adapting processes and management systems that affect being a global player. The consumer is becoming more aware and I have couple of messages for the students.

First – recognize the commitment you have made. That, I believe, is the first principle of excellence. Great expectations lead to great performance.

Second – master the skills of your profession. By taking up this initiative to study you have almost done that. The key to excellence is knowledge and competence. But don’t stop there! When you feel confident of your competence, begin to innovate. It is only when you are confident and comfortable in your discipline that you can engage in creative and innovative thoughts. The methodology you apply to, addresses daily practices. The use of technology that goes beyond the routine and predictable, the innovation, will move you from competence to excellence.

There will always be forks on the road; questions that rise up to meet us, doubts that pursue us. Always go back to the beginning of your dreams, your hopes, your aspirations to how you felt on this day. This is the compass that will guide your actions. The world holds endless possibilities if you are willing to work hard and persevere.
